A black, white, and yellow Moorish idol with its long trailing fin swimming over a Waikiki reef

Some reef fish are so striking that you remember them long after your snorkel is over. The Moorish idol is one of them. With its bold black, white, and yellow bands and a long, flowing fin that trails behind like a ribbon, it is one of the most elegant and recognizable fish on Waikiki's reefs. Here is how to spot this beauty, known in Hawaiian as kihikihi.

A Fish You Can't Mistake

The Moorish idol has a tall, disc-shaped body painted with dramatic vertical bands of black, white, and bright yellow. Its most distinctive feature is a long, whip-like extension of its top fin that streams gracefully as it swims. You might think it looks a little like a butterflyfish at first, but that flowing fin gives it away every time.

The Lone Kihikihi

The Moorish idol is special in Hawaii because it is the only member of its fish family, the Zanclidae, found on the reef. Its Hawaiian name, kihikihi, refers to the way it zigzags and angles through the coral. It uses its side fins to move delicately, often poking its long snout into cracks and crevices to nibble sponges and tiny creatures hidden in the reef.

🐠 Moorish Idol Quick Facts

  • Called kihikihi in Hawaiian, meaning to zigzag through the reef.
  • Bold black, white, and yellow bands with a long trailing fin.
  • The only member of its fish family on Hawaii's reefs.
  • Uses its long snout to feed on sponges in reef crevices.

Where to Spot One

Moorish idols are common on Waikiki's reefs and are often seen alone, in pairs, or sometimes in small groups drifting over the coral. Look for that unmistakable ribbon fin as they weave among the rocks. They are a little shy, so move slowly and calmly, and you will get a wonderful view of one gliding past without startling it.

Watch, Don't Touch

As with all reef life, the golden rule applies: look, but do not touch. Give the Moorish idol and the coral it feeds on plenty of space, never chase it for a photo, and let it go about its business. Watching one glide gracefully through the reef, fin streaming behind it, is a reward all on its own.
